Crusaders have officially announced the signing of Australian rugby veteran James O'Connor for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The 34-year-old, who has enjoyed a stellar international career with 64 Test caps for the Wallabies and over 120 Super Rugby appearances, will bring a wealth of experience to the Christchurch-based franchise.

O’Connor’s signing is a significant addition for the Crusaders, as the utility back has been a standout performer throughout his career, representing the Western Force, Melbourne Rebels, and most recently, the Queensland Reds. With nearly 250 points scored for his country and a reputation for versatility across the backline, he is expected to make an impact both on and off the field.

Joining the Crusaders as a first-five, O’Connor will be part of a strong backline contingent alongside Rivez Reihana and Taha Kemara, where he is set to contribute his tactical expertise and mentorship.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new challenge, O’Connor shared his excitement about joining the renowned Crusaders setup.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Crusaders for the 2025 season and eager to test myself in a new environment,” O’Connor said.

“My whole career I’ve heard so much about the Crusaders culture and innovation. So to experience it first hand and learn a new way of playing the game is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Crusaders Head Coach Rob Penney welcomed O’Connor’s arrival, describing him as a “world-class and ambitious athlete.”

“When we heard he was available we reached out as we thought we could offer him something new and challenging,” Penney said.

“We have two exciting and talented 10s in Rivez and Taha, and James brings a level of maturity that we believe will complement them exceptionally well.

“Having played internationally and in a range of overseas competitions, we’re looking forward to what James can bring to our environment from his 17 seasons of professional football.

“He’s also a competitor and ambitious, which will ensure there is weekly competition for the 10 jersey.”

With 17 seasons of professional rugby under his belt, O’Connor’s presence is expected to bolster the Crusaders’ squad as they look to continue their legacy of success in the Super Rugby Pacific competition.
