Former Wallabies star James O'Connor is reportedly in discussions with the Crusaders as he considers extending his Super Rugby Pacific career through a potential trans-Tasman switch.

The former Queensland Reds and Wallabies playmaker, now 34, turned down an offer to remain with the Reds next season, where injuries limited him to a mentoring role throughout 2024.

The Crusaders are looking to strengthen their squad after losing both Richie Mo’unga to Japan and Fergus Burke to Saracens in England. If the deal goes through, O’Connor could find himself immediately taking on the No.10 role for Rob Penney’s side, helping to fill the gap left by these key departures.

According to the NZ Herald, discussions between O’Connor and the 14-time champions are underway as the Crusaders aim to rebuild following a surprising finals miss in the 2024 season.

The move would mark a significant trans-Tasman shift for O’Connor, who has already amassed 63 Test caps and 127 Super Rugby appearances across three clubs.

O’Connor, currently vacationing in New Zealand, has a connection to the country through his parents’ birthplace. He previously had discussions with the Chiefs regarding a potential switch three years ago, but the move was blocked by Rugby Australia at the time.

In addition to his playing experience, O’Connor was also involved in coaching schoolboy rugby in Queensland last season, showcasing his commitment to developing the sport at grassroots level.

If the deal with the Crusaders materializes, it could pave the way for one of the most notable trans-Tasman player shifts in recent years.
