The All Blacks have confirmed that Tamati Ellison has officially joined their coaching team in a permanent capacity.

This move follows his appointment as an assistant coach in 2023 under head coach Scott Robertson. Ellison was given additional responsibilities after Leon MacDonald left the team in August.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new position, Ellison shared his excitement to contribute more significantly to the national team’s success.

Ellison, who made his All Blacks debut against Italy in 2009, went on to play four Tests for New Zealand, including matches against Ireland, South Africa, and Scotland in 2012.

Over his extensive playing career, Ellison has represented Wellington, Otago, Blues, Hurricanes, Highlanders, and the Melbourne Rebels. He also played 57 games for the Black Rams in Japan and secured a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Sevens.

As a result of his new role, Ellison has officially ended his tenure with the Crusaders, focusing fully on his responsibilities with the All Blacks.

“He’s had a huge impact over the last couple of years with us and we thoroughly appreciate his contribution," said Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge.

Crusaders coach Rob Penney said he was unsurprised in his elevation to an All Blacks role.

“To have someone who can coach both sides of the ball at an elite level is rare.”
