George Ford could make a return for England’s autumn internationals after scans confirmed that he will not require surgery on a torn thigh muscle sustained during Sale Sharks’ recent Gallagher Premiership match against Saracens.

The fly-half underwent a scan earlier this week following the injury, which he picked up during the 45-26 defeat last Saturday.

Initial fears of a lengthy absence have been allayed, bringing a sigh of relief to both Sale Sharks and England head coach Steve Borthwick.

The 30-year-old’s recovery will now be closely monitored as he begins his rehabilitation program in preparation for a crucial period of club and international fixtures.

“Sale Sharks can confirm that fly-half George Ford suffered a tear to his right quad during the early stages of the Gallagher Premiership round two game at Saracens on Saturday,” the club announced in a statement.

"They further added that, after consulting with a specialist, the decision was made that Ford does not need surgical intervention.

Ford’s potential availability comes as a significant boost for England, who are set to begin their autumn campaign against New Zealand at Twickenham on November 2.

His presence would provide much-needed experience and depth at the fly-half position, especially considering his absence from England’s summer tour of Japan and New Zealand due to an Achilles injury.

Ford left the field early during the match against Saracens after attempting a long-range penalty, raising concerns about another prolonged spell on the sidelines.

However, with positive news on his recovery, both Sale Sharks and England will be hopeful that Ford can regain fitness in time for the high-profile fixtures ahead.
