The Roosters have announced that Wallabies star Mark Nawaqanitawase has been released from his contract and will be able to join the rugby league club following the completion of his rugby sevens commitments at the Olympics.

Nawaqanitawase had signed a two-year contract last December to join the Roosters in 2025. However, after being excluded from the Wallabies squad for this month’s Tests, there has been an effort to expedite his transition so he can spend some time playing rugby league this season.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson emphasized on Sunday night that their star recruit, Mark Nawaqanitawase, will need ample time to adapt to the new sport. Nawaqanitawase is expected to spend time in the NSW Cup, where the Roosters currently rank second last.

In a statement, Robinson reiterated that the former Wallaby will dedicate significant time to learning the nuances required to succeed in rugby league.

“While Mark will be taking the final spot in our roster for 2024, our focus won’t be on rushing him into the NRL but about fast-tracking his transition into rugby league,” Robinson said.

“We’re really pleased to be in a position to have Mark join us once his commitments in Paris are over.

“We’re looking forward to officially welcoming Mark to the Roosters next month and we wish him all the very best in his representative duties at the Olympics. Bonne chance (Good luck)!”
