Cardiff Rugby have announced that hooker Dafydd Hughes has signed a new contract with the Welsh province.

Hughes joined Cardiff last season from Championship side Jersey Reds and has made two appearances for province since then.

He made his professional rugby debut with provincial side Llandovery in 2015 before playing his first game for Scarlets a year later. He made 38 appearances for the Scarlets before being released at the end of the 2022/23 season before joining Jersey Reds.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to remain at Cardiff. Since the sad collapse of Jersey, I have had a great welcome at the Arms Park and have enjoyed being part of a really competitive squad, which is full of potential and striving to improve," he told the club's official website.

“There is a lot of competition at hooker but we all get along well and are driving each other to become better players.

“It was an honour to pull on the blue and black jersey this year and I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to do that again next season.”

Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt is pleased to have Hughes extending his stay with the club.

“We were pleased to add Daf to our front-row resources last season and he arrived at the Arms Park with a point to prove and opportunity to grasp.

“While his playing time has been limited in a really competitive position for us, I have been really impressed by his resilience, professionalism and work ethic.

“He is great for our environment and is someone who keeps his head down and just goes about his work quietly and diligently.

“As a player he is technically very well-rounded and I have absolutely no doubt that when he has an opportunity he will take it given the experience he already has at this level.”
