New Zealand have been dealt a blow ahead of the upcoming Rugby Championship campaign with captain Scott Barrett set to be on the sidelines.

The 30-year-old sustained a finger injury and is set to undergo a surgery that is likely to see him miss the start of the competition.

The news will be a big blow to head coach Scott Robertson as veteran locks Samuel Whitelock and Brodie Retallick announced retirement following the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Barrett, who has played 72 Tests for New Zealand was appointed the captain since Robertson took over. His younger brother Jordie and Ardie Savea are the current vice-captains of the side.

The news was confirmed by a statement released by New Zealand Rugby.

“Scott Barrett injured a finger during the All Blacks Test against Fiji in San Diego which has required a surgical treatment after his return to New Zealand,” read the statement.

“The injury is now being assessed.”

New Zealand are set to name their squad for the Rugby Championship on Sunday. They will be facing Argentina in the opening round of the competition on 10th August.
