Welsh rugby legend Jonathan Davies has announced his retirement from the sport, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned over a decade.

The 36-year-old, known for his powerful performances in both domestic and international rugby, made the emotional decision to step away from the game following the birth of his first child, prioritizing family over a final playing stint.

Davies leaves behind a legacy that few in Welsh rugby can rival. He earned 96 caps for Wales, representing his country in multiple Six Nations Championships and World Cups. Additionally, Davies completed two British & Irish Lions tours, further cementing his status as one of the sport’s elite players.

"After taking time away from the game following the end of my last season with the Scarlets, I have come to the decision to call time on my professional rugby career," he told in a statement released.

"I have enjoyed a break and a summer at home with my family, and been lucky enough to spend quality time with my newborn son, alongside my wife, as we embark on this new chapter together as parents."

Domestically, Davies spent the majority of his career with the Scarlets, where he played 209 matches, contributing significantly to the team’s success. He also enjoyed a brief but successful stint at Clermont Auvergne in France, demonstrating his versatility and skill across different leagues.

"I will inevitably miss the camaraderie of training and playing competitively alongside my team mates, but over these past few months, I have been able to assess all of my options and reflect on a career of which I am incredibly proud."

"There are too many people to thank; the dedicated and loyal fans, quality team mates, supportive coaches, staff, friends, and most of all, my family, all who have believed in me.

"I am so grateful for the support, especially when faced with the challenges and setbacks of injuries. It's been an incredible ride, with two Lions tours, two Grand Slams, and the Pro 12 title to name a few".
