Aphelele Fassi attributes mental strength and coaching support for his breakthrough season with the Springboks.

Fassi, who delivered outstanding performances for the Sharks this season, was rewarded with a starting position in six Tests for the Springboks.

Showcasing his versatility, the 26-year-old was dependable under the high ball, solid in defence, and impactful on attack. His powerful left boot played a crucial role in the Springboks’ tactical kicking strategy.

Reflecting on his journey, Fassi enjoyed a breakthrough comeback for the national team. After making his debut in July 2021 against Georgia, he entered this season with just three Test caps. When asked how he stayed motivated while waiting for his opportunity, Fassi credited the support and honesty of the coaching staff for helping him stay mentally strong and focused on improvement.

Acknowledging the crucial role of his coaches, both at the Sharks and with the Springboks, Fassi emphasised the importance of maintaining self-belief and continuously refining his game.

“The Sharks coaches also ensured that I didn’t doubt myself, and they helped me work on the areas that I lacked in,” he shared.

Looking ahead, Fassi remains committed to elevating his performance even further. Despite his recent success, he highlighted that in sport, perfection is elusive, and there is always room for growth.

“I do think my game has improved, but in sport nothing is ever perfect and there’s always room for improvement. Personally, my goal will always be to just go out there and play the best.”
