South African hooker Bongi Mbonambi has refuted allegations of using discriminatory language directed at England flanker Tom Curry during their Rugby World Cup semi-final in October.

Mbonambi criticised the accusations as "unprofessional." World Rugby, which was also tasked with examining a similar incident in a previous match between the two teams in London last year, determined there was insufficient evidence to support the claims.

This decision came after a thorough review of video footage, audio recordings, and statements from players on both sides. Mbonambi contends that Curry misunderstood his instructions to teammates in Afrikaans, which bore a resemblance in sound to the alleged discriminatory language, during the tense 16-15 victory in Paris.

"I think it is a very sad thing when you live in a 'first-world' country and you think the rest of the world speaks English," Mbonambi told BBC Sport Africa.

"It was unprofessional on their part. They could have gone on a website and looked for an English dictionary and for the word in Afrikaans. People [in South Africa] understood, but obviously their side misunderstood.

"I'm glad it was well taken care of, and that is all in the past now. But I have never racially swore at him."

Following an investigation, World Rugby said there was no conclusive evidence that Mbonambi abused Curry but they reckoned Curry made the allegations in good faith.

"Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges," World Rugby said.

"Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light.

"It is important to note that World Rugby accepts that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith, and that there is no suggestion that the allegation was deliberately false or malicious."

Mbonambi eventually played the victorious World Cup final against New Zealand just three minutes after leaving the field with a knee injury.
