South Africa have have called up outside centre Lukhanyo Am to the Rugby World Cup squad as a replacement for injured wing Makazole Mapimpi.

Mapimpi has been ruled out of the ongoing campaign after sustaining a fractured eye socket during the game against Tonga last weekend.

Am, a member of the 2019 Rugby World Cup winning South Africa squad was left out in the initial selection due to a knee injury but head coach Jacques Nienaber has handed him a recall now.

The news was confirmed by World Rugby in a statement released.

“Lukhanyo Am will join the South Africa squad, replacing Makazole Mapimpi after an injury sustained during the match against Tonga,” the statement read.

Am will become the second replacement in the squad after playmaker Handre Pollard replaced Malcolm Marx after the latter sustained a knee problem.

South Africa currently hold the top place in Pool B with 15 points and should make it to the quarter-final of the tournament unless Scotland beat Ireland by 21 points or more and Andy Farrell's men claim a bonus point.
